Issued March 2, 2010 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Tariff classification

HTS codes: 8483.10.5000

Headings: 8483

Product description

Descriptive literature and schematic drawings were submitted. The item under consideration is identified as a motor shaft. The shaft, which is splined and threaded, is made from cold drawn round steel bar that has been fed through a screw machine and then mechanically worked (ground). After importation, this steel shaft is shipped to Mexico where it is incorporated into a finished motor used in a wet-dry vacuum cleaner. The splined shaft holds the armature and transmits rotary motion from the motor to a fan/blower.

CBP rationale

The applicable subheading for the motor shaft will be 8483.10.5000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for other transmission shafts and cranks.
