Dear Ms. Casillas: In your letter dated May 22, 1997, you requested a tariff classification ruling. The merchandise under consideration involves a "Memorex" CD-202E 20X Speed CD-Rom Drive for personal computers. This CD-ROM Drive offers 20X speed application in markets such as electronic publishing, entertainment, and business applications. The "Memorex" CD-202E 20X Speed CD-ROM Drive is a storage unit that fits in the same slot as the floppy disk drive. The rate of duty will be 3.9 cents per square meter of recording surface. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
