Hemisphere Center U.S. Rt 1-9 South Newark, NJ 07114 RE: The tariff classification of a serpentine coaster set from Taiwan. Dear Mr. De Castro: In your letter dated May 18, 1994, on behalf of Albert E. Price, you requested a tariff classification ruling. The submitted sample, Stock No. 4045, Pompeii Collection, is a coaster set consisting of six coasters made of serpentine, a semi-precious gemstone, with cork insets contained in a plastic stand. The coaster set is a composite article, the essential character of which is the serpentine. The applicable subheading for the serpentine coaster set will be 7116.20.2000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for Articles of precious or semiprecious stones (natural, synthetic or reconstructed): Other: Of semiprecious stones (except rock crystal). The rate of duty will be 21% ad valorem. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177). - 2 - A copy of this ruling letter should be attached to the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported.
