NY R02630 October 14, 2005 CLA-2-90:RR:NC:N1:105 R02630 CATEGORY: Classification TARIFF NO.: 9014.80.4000 Ms. Deborah F. Janusa J.W. Allen & Co., Inc. 200 Crofton Road, Box 34 Building 7D, Suite 800 Kenner, LA 70062 RE: The tariff classification of Autopilots from Great Britain Dear Ms. Janusa: In your letter dated September 29, 2005, and your fax dated October 5, 2005, you requested a tariff classification ruling. No sample was submitted. In your letter, you put an asterisk next to the NT951G Autopilot and the NT990ASI so we take your import to be shipments of the two together. The NT951G is described as “for Mag and Gyro based vessels to approx 2000 gross registered tonnes.” The top of the page indicates that the NT990ASI is a Steering Interface and its description states that its purpose is “to provide dual galvanically isolated analogue signal outputs for the control of analogue steering machines or waterjets.” It is designed specifically as the interface for several Navitron Autopilots, including the NT951G. Harmonized System Explanatory Note I-B-1 to Heading 9014 gives “Automatic pilots (Gyro pilots)...” as an example of its scope. From the description on the Navitron web site, it appears to be “electrical” as defined by Additional US Note 2 to Chapter 90. We agree that he applicable subheading for the NT951G/NT990ASI will be 9014.80.4000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for “other,” “electrical” navigational instruments and appliances. The rate of duty will be free. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177). A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If you have any questions regarding the ruling, contact National Import Specialist J. Sheridan at 646-733-3012. Sincerely, Robert B. Swierupski Director, National Commodity Specialist Division
