Tariff classification

HTS codes: 9505.90.4000

Headings: 9505

Product description

The lantern is spherical in shape and measures approximately 14” in diameter. It is constructed out of paper wrapped wire covered with regular paper pulp, which serves as the shade. Several images of a stylized bird perched atop some shrubbery are printed on the shade. A steel stretcher is included, and is inserted into the paper lantern to expand the article to its spherical shape. Although referred to as a “lantern”, the article does not provide usable light, but instead, is a variant of the traditional Chinese lantern. It will be used purely as an outdoor hanging party decoration.

CBP rationale

The applicable subheading for the Chinese Hanging Lantern will be 9505.90.4000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for "Confetti, paper spirals or streamers, party favors and noisemakers; parts and accessories thereof.
