The tariff classification of a Tire Pressure Monitoring Valve from Japan
Issued February 26, 2003 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Tariff classification
HTS codes: 9026.20.4000
Headings: 9026
Product description
The sample and your information indicate that it will replace the ordinary air valve in an automobile tire. While the automobile is in operation, it will measure the pressure of the air in the tire and transmit that information via its short range transmitter to a receiver including a display inside the car (not part of your item) so that the driver will learn of changes in air pressure (primarily for safety). While it does function as a valve, its essential character comes from the elements that make it a pressure telemetry device. In accordance with Harmonized System General Explanatory Note IV to Chapter 90, measurement telemetry units are classified in the heading of the measurement device. We assume the measurement is performed “electrically” per Additional U.S. Note 2 to Chapter 90.
CBP rationale
The applicable subheading for your sample will be 9026.20.4000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for “electrical” instruments and appliances for measuring or checking pressure.
