The tariff classification of train cases from China

Issued October 19, 2000 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Tariff classification

HTS codes: 7419.99.1500

Headings: 7419

Product description

The cases come in sets of two, and there are two styles with the same item number. All of the cases are made of wood, are covered entirely with embossed copper and have handles. The interiors are wholly lined with flocked textile fabric which simulates felt. The boxes are essentially for trinkets and/or memorabilia. The items are not put up to be actual “train cases.” Each box is not specially shaped nor fitted to contain any particular articles or set of articles. The rectangular cases measure 9 ¼ inches by 6 ¾ inches by 5 ½ inches high [23.5 x 17.15 cm. x 14 cm.]; and 5 ¼ inches by 7 ¾ inches by 3 ¾ inches high [13.34 cm. x 18.7 cm. x 9.53 cm.] The oval cases are 10 ½ inches by 7 ½ inches by 5 ¾ inches [26.7 cm x 19 cm. x 14.6 cm]; and 8 ½ inches by 5 ¾ inches by 3 ¾ inches high [21.6 cm. x 19 cm. x 9.53 cm.]

CBP rationale

The applicable subheading for the cases will be 7419.99.1500, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for other articles of copper, other, other, containers of a kind normally carried on the person, in the pocket or in the handbag.
