Box 3165 Harrisburg, PA 17105 RE: The tariff classification of a jewelry box from China. Dear Ms. Aldinger: In your letter dated April 8, 1997, you requested a tariff classification ruling for a jewelry box. The sample submitted, identified as "Rite Aid" item number 971447, is a jewelry box which appears to be composed of a fiber board base covered with a printed paper exterior. The item features a triangular shaped mirror on the inside of the lid, a spring activated dancing ballerina and one pull out drawer. The box has a gold clasp closure and the drawer has a gold pull knob. The box measures approximately 5 7/8" x 4 3/8" x 3 3/8". The applicable subheading for the Item 971447, the jewelry box of paper, will be 4202.99.5000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for trunks, suitcases...; traveling bag..., jewelry boxes and similar containers, wholly or mainly covered with paper, other. The rate of duty will be 7.8 percent ad valorem. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
