The Statistical Suffix is the 9th and 10th digit of a U.S. HTS code. Unlike the first eight digits, which determine the duty rate, the statistical suffix is used solely to collect trade statistics for the U.S. Census Bureau.
While the suffix doesn't affect the duty rate directly, it can affect eligibility for special programs, participation in trade remedy investigations, and proper EEI filing in the Automated Export System.
Selecting the correct statistical suffix is part of the importer's reasonable care obligation. CBP can issue penalties for misclassification even at the 10-digit level when the error affects entry accuracy.
